Sleep in Amersfoort
An exhibition about that strange state called 'Sleep' is on view at Kunsthal Kade in Amersfoort until January 5, 2025. Which sleeper archetypes have actually been depicted in art over the past centuries? An overview, also fun to check which type you are yourself. Something so ordinary is explained by science and art. An exhibition for the whole family with a scavenger hunt for the children, making it interactive and fun for the last day of the Christmas holidays.
Sleep
The family exhibition *Sleep!* takes you on a brief exploration of the vast realm of sleep and dreams, through the eyes of some fifty visual artists and designers. Here, a different time reigns for a moment. You traverse the four sleep phases from drowsiness to light sleep, proceed to deep sleep, and (sleep)walk via dreams to the main hall where the bed takes center stage. Or you can take the detour via Sleep/Wake, as far from everyone has an ideal sleep cycle. Stress and anxiety often lead to insomnia and sleep problems. If desired, take a second tour to a second sleep cycle, continuing until you hopefully leave the exhibition completely refreshed!
“Did you sleep well?” is a question frequently asked. It is a fundamental question in which the respondent’s response immediately provides insight into the alertness, mood, and ability to put things into perspective of the person in question. Sleep, like food and drink, is a basic necessity of life. Every week, magazines are filled with tips and tricks for a good night’s rest, with the golden rule of rest, cleanliness, and regularity recurring as the ideal form of sleep hygiene. Humans spend a third of their lives in sleep: a state in which we experience a reduction in consciousness, resulting in a lack of contact with the outside world. Our body and mind come to rest. We surrender to it, vulnerable and thrown back upon ourselves. Why we sleep remains an unsolved mystery. The process of cell repair, energy conservation, learning, and the recording of memories are three key pillars in current theories.

During sleep, a process of cell repair, energy conservation, learning, and the consolidation of memories takes place. Apart from that, sleep remains a mystery.
