Frankenstein

The story Frankenstein by philosopher and writer Mary Shelley, which was published in 1818, is considered by many to be the first science fiction story.

Jules Verne

The French science fiction writer Jules Verne is perhaps the most famous writer of science fiction stories. He published 54 books, the majority of which can be classified as science fiction. These stories dealt with subjects such as rockets, tanks, and aircraft carriers.

In France, these six stamps were issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his death. The stamps depict scenes from the following books: Five Weeks in a Balloon (1863), From the Earth to the Moon (1865), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Michael Strogoff (1874/75), Around the World in 80 Days (1873/74), and 20.000 Leagues Under the Sea (1869/70).

HGWells

The British writer H.G. Wells, known for War of the Worlds and Time Machine, among others, wrote a vast number of science fiction novels. Forty years after its publication, the story War of the Worlds became a huge success once again with its adaptation into a radio play by Orson Welles. The radio play was broadcast as a Halloween special on October 30, 1938. Many listeners had missed the intro to the play and thought that a real Martian invasion had begun.

Star Trek

Creator Gene Roddenberry was the first person to be scattered in space during a space burial in 1992.
