Santa Claus is comin 'to town

Santa Claus is a folkloric figure who distributes presents to children around the Christmas period. The most common depiction is Santa Claus, who originated in the United States. This figure is portrayed as a stocky, cheerful old man with a long white beard, dressed in a red coat with a white fur collar and cuffs, red trousers with white fur trim, a red hat with white fur, a black leather belt and boots, and carrying a bag full of goodies and gifts for children. Have you seen Santa Claus at his permanent spot in Rotterdam?

Santa Claus

Santa Claus (also known as Saint Nicholas or Santa) is a legendary figure originating in Western Christian culture who reportedly brings gifts during the late evening and night hours on Christmas Eve. He is said to do this with the help of Christmas elves, who make the toys in his workshop, and with the help of flying reindeer that pull his sleigh through the air. The popular concept of Santa Claus originates from folklore traditions surrounding the 4th-century Christian bishop Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children. Saint Nicholas became famous for his reported generosity and secret gifts. The image of Santa Claus shows similarities to the English figure of Father Christmas, and they are now popularly regarded as the same person. Santa Claus is generally depicted as a sturdy, cheerful man with a white beard, often wearing glasses, dressed in a red coat with a white fur collar and cuffs, red trousers with white fur cuffs, a red hat trimmed with white fur, a black leather belt and boots, and carrying a bag full of gifts for children. He is popularly associated with a deep, hearty laugh, which is often rendered in Christmas literature as “ho, ho, ho!” This image originated in North America in the 19th century, under the influence of Dutch immigrants who brought the legend of Sinterklaas (“Saint Nicholas”) to New Amsterdam (present-day New York City) in the 17th century. It has been maintained and reinforced through songs, radio, television, children's books, family Christmas traditions, films, and advertising.

Santa Claus in Rotterdam

Santa Claus, also known as Gnome Buttplug, is a sculpture by Paul McCarthy. It stands on Eendrachtsplein in the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The sculpture was created by the American artist in 2001, commissioned by the International Sculpture Collection for a location in the city.

The sculpture depicts Santa Claus holding an abstract, elongated object in his right hand. According to the artist, the object could be a tree, a butt plug, or something else. The Rotterdam city council purchased Santa Claus for 280.000 euros with the intention of placing the sculpture near the De Doelen building. This led to considerable opposition; for many people, the sculpture had a sexual connotation, which is why it quickly acquired its nickname. On September 22, 2005, as a compromise, the sculpture was placed in the courtyard of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, where it was unveiled four days later by Mayor Opstelten. Because the museum was going to renovate the courtyard, the sculpture was placed on the sidewalk in front of the museum on August 21, 2008.

In early 2008, the Municipality of Rotterdam planned to move the statue to the Van Oldenbarneveltplaats at the head of the “Koopgoot”. This plan met with considerable resistance from a number of business owners around this square. Ultimately, in June 2008, it was decided to place the statue on the Eendrachtsplein (as part of the Westersingel Sculpture Route), following intensive lobbying by the Binnenweg shopkeepers' association. The statue was transported to the Eendrachtsplein on November 28, 2008, in a colorful procession and installed there. Wouldn't this section fit better in the blog 'Dickpic, … , tear-off calendar'?
