Sail Harlingen: July 3 to July 6, 2026
Sail Harlingen will be held from July 3 to July 6, 2026. During the previous editions in 2022, 2018, and 2014, the event attracted around 300.000 visitors to Harlingen. You can find more information at: www.harlingensail.com The Tall Ships Races are an annual series of races (since 1956) for large ships between European cities. This year, in addition to Harlingen, the ships will also call at the ports of Aarhus and Aalborg, Stavanger, and Antwerp between June 24 and August 2, 2026. Goal: to give young people under the age of 25 experience with ocean sailing. Come one, come all to Harlingen this weekend!
Statsraad Lehmkuhl
The Statsraad Lehmkuhl is a three-masted steel boat owned by the Stiftelsen Seilskipet Statsraad Lehmkuhl. The Statsraad Lehmkuhl was built in 1914 in Bremershaven as a training ship for the German merchant navy. Originally, the ship was named Grossherzog Friedrich August. In 1923, the ship was purchased by the Norwegian Shipowners Association. In 1924, the ship transferred to the Bergen Schol Ship Foundation, where it was operated until 1966, with the exception of the Second World War. A shipowner from Bergen owned the ship until 1973, after which it was donated to the current owner in 1978.
Frederic Chopin
This white ship with the red stripe above the waterline, her crew in red and blue polo shirts, and the mascot, a red bird with a yellow beak, are a unique sight in themselves. The Frederyk Chopin is a two-masted training ship. The Frederyk Chopin was built in Gdansk from 1990 to 1992. The ship was named after the famous nineteenth-century Polish composer Fryderyk Chopin and was used from the start for sailing training and international training programs.
Jens Krogh
Jens Krogh was built in Frederikshavn in 1899 and served as a fishing vessel for the Danish fleet for many years. After a long time as a fishing vessel, the ship was converted and restored into a traditional sailing ship for educational and cultural purposes. The ship has been participating in the Tall Ships Races since 1976.
Sørland
The Sørlandet is a Norwegian ship owned and operated by a non-profit foundation. The ship has several achievements to its name, such as: the oldest fully rigged ship in service in the world, the first Norwegian training ship to cross the Atlantic Ocean, and the first tall ship to offer sailing training for women. The Sørlandet was built in 1927 in Kristiansand, Norway. The ship's name means "the southern land." The fully rigged ship was intended to train young people for the merchant navy. In the 1970s, the demand for this training declined, and the ship expanded its activities.
Harlingen

People come to our port city from all over the world for Harlinger Aardewerk en Tegelfabriek. It is one of the few remaining authentic tile factories. The company is commissioned for countless international projects, requiring owner Rikus Oswald to travel extensively. His shop is located at Voorstraat 84 and the factory at Oude Trekweg 81-2. What makes the creations of Harlinger Aardewerk so special and beloved? How did Harlingen grow into the cradle of Frisian pottery?
Pottery has been painted and fired in Harlingen for centuries. "That is actually quite logical," says Rikus. "Harlingen is a clay deposit. Our basic raw material is abundant here. In addition, other raw materials arrive easily via the port. Harlingen is therefore a very suitable location to develop a pottery industry. We owe all our pottery to the city's location relative to the Wadden Sea." It is therefore no coincidence that the first factory was discovered in Harlingen, dating back to 1598: the Gleybackery of Steffen Gunter de Olde. During the excavations of this factory in 1987, pottery was even found bearing the year 1614. This made it the oldest Frisian majolica ever found.
Harlingen Lighthouse
The Harlingen Lighthouse is the lighthouse of the city of Harlingen in the Dutch province of Friesland. From the tower, shipping traffic along the Pollendam was guided. In 2023, the lighthouse served as a backdrop for the finale of The Passion.
Description
The lighthouse was built between 1920 and 1922 by the brothers G. & A. Broersma, based on a design by Otto Jelsma, the same designer as the Noordwijk aan Zee lighthouse. It replaced a hexagonal wooden yellow-brown striped lighthouse at the same location. Originally, the tower did not have a white plaster layer; this was only applied in 1971. The tower had a fixed white light of 6.500 candela with a red sector. The lighthouse had a light height of 21 meters above sea level and a range of 13 nautical miles. The lighthouse light was permanently extinguished in 1998. The navigation channels and harbor entrance had been modified, causing the lighthouse to lose its function after 75 years. In 1998, the tower came into private hands. The tower was converted into a one-room hotel. To achieve this, an extra floor was added between the tower and the lantern house. The design for this was by the architect B. Pietersma. From the lantern house, there is a view of 24 meters above average high water. The tower's old optics can be found on the ground floor.
