The price of a postage stamp will increase by 10 cents on July 1, 2025.
Tomorrow is the big day, so if you still want to send a bulk of mail, do it today. Chances are the mailbox has already been emptied by the mail carrier who stopped by this morning. However, at postal companies (read: supermarkets, bookstores, other businesses, etc.), mail is not collected until the end of the day. It is clear that postal rates must be increased every six months because less and less mail is being sent.
Rate increase effective July 1, 2025
From July 1, 2025, PostNL will adjust the price of a stamp to €1,31. This is unavoidable due to steadily declining postal volumes and rising costs. Delivering mail now costs more than it generates. A political decision regarding a future-proof postal law has yet to be made.
Maurice Unck, Director of Mail at PostNL: “We have the honorable and statutory duty to deliver mail throughout the Netherlands. Because less and less mail is being sent, while costs continue to rise, that task is coming under increasing financial pressure. Nevertheless, you see a mail carrier on every street in the Netherlands five days a week. We are legally obliged to do so, but it is labor-intensive and costly. Moreover, it no longer aligns with the changed customer needs of both consumers and sending business users.” ….. “We understand that no one likes paying more, but the new rates are unavoidable. On average, a Dutch household sends six letters per year, so this means on an annual basis € 0,60 extra. This makes it one of the necessary steps to keep mail accessible and reliable for everyone in the future as well.” You can read the rest of the PostNL news report in the links at the bottom of the blog. PostNL's major business clients remain unaffected.
Interesting story (read the links at the bottom) from De Telegraaf stating that large business clients will not face a price increase as of July 1, 2025. PostNL fears that major clients such as the Tax and Customs Administration, the Postcode Lottery, or advertising services will drop out. PostNL states that it will suffer a loss of €30 million this year and another €38 million next year. This already includes the price increases effective January 1 and July 1. However, the mail to which the price increase applies accounts for only 5% of the total number of mail items. PostNL expects this year 1,4 billion letters are sent, of which only 70 milion Ordinary mail is, for example, Christmas cards. The rest is business mail. Large companies pay only 40 cents and that rate is NOT increased.
If these large customers were to receive a 10-cent increase, the aforementioned deficit would be eliminated. However, PostNL will not implement that increase for business mail. PostNL fears that large companies will switch to digital mail. But in reality, the taxpayer pays much more than the € 0,60 extra per year because the deficit resulting from keeping business customers out of the picture amounts to €30 / €38 million per year respectively. The expectation is that the rise in postage stamp prices will continue, as the Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) applies a price ceiling of €2,90 per letter. If the price of the stamp becomes more expensive than the card itself, then the scenario of Denmark (PostNord) comes into play: they intend to stop delivering physical mail altogether at the end of this year.

Spotta a competitor of PostNL?
The national distributor of advertising leaflets Mock will also deliver mail. The company aims to become a new competitor to PostNL, which is currently the sole provider of letters, magazines, and other postal items throughout the Netherlands. The move comes at a time when there is escalating debate regarding the powerful position of the postal company and amendments to the Postal Act are on the political agenda.
Spotta officially registered with the postal market regulator, the Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM), in May 2025, as required under current law. To date, Spotta delivers weekly newspapers and advertising leaflets from supermarkets, drugstores, etc., to over 5,2 million households nationwide. This constitutes unaddressed printed matter and is therefore permitted under the Postal Act. Spotta has over 21.000 deliverers. Spotta Director Yme Pasma intends to invest 20 million euros in postal delivery (addressed advertising mail, direct mail).
It has been five years since Sandd disappeared. PostNL once again had a monopoly position for postal delivery. In 2022, however, competition did emerge from DHL, which specialized in mail items weighing 50 grams or more.

PostNL is allowed to take two days to deliver a letter after all.
