Peter Post on Personal Stamp

cycling France post
Peter Post, a man of character, was a professional cyclist from 1956 to 1972, who became a team manager after his career. During his cycling career, Post rode primarily on the track, where he achieved 65 victories in six days achieved, which was a record for a long time, but he was also very capable on the road, as evidenced by his victory in Paris-Roubaix in 1964. Upon his victory in Paris-Roubaix, Post received the “Yellow pennantawarded the distinction for the highest average speed achieved in an international classic. With this, he improved upon the performance of the Dutchman. Jo de Roo from 1962. This hour average is still recorded as the record for Paris-Roubaix today.

Peter Post, a cycling life, as team manager and sports director

After his active career as a cyclist, he became Peter Post in 1974 team manager of the TI-Raleigh team. Initially, the team was primarily active in track competitions, but after the successes of Roy Schuiten The sponsor increased the budget, and the team was built up into a very successful squad that was dominant in numerous road races. Peter Post was undoubtedly fortunate in this regard, as there were many good Dutch cyclists at that time. Such a reason Gerrie Kneteman, Jan Raas, Hennie Kuiper, Johan van der Velde, Henk Lubberding, René Pijnen en Joop Sweet Milk all for his team for a short or longer period. His merit, however, is that he established an excellent organization, attracted the right riders, and often managed to bind them to the team for years. The team experienced its peak in 1980. In the Tour de France That year, the team managed to win 11 stages, and Joop Zoetemelk won the overall classification.

In 1983, a rift occurred with his most important rider, Jan Raas, at a time when the sponsor withdrew from cycling. A new main sponsor was found in Panasonic (Raleigh continued to supply the equipment for another two seasons), and surprisingly, the successes continued with other, mostly foreign, riders, including Eric Vanderaerden, Phil Anderson, Vyacheslav Ekimov, Robert Millar, Olaf Ludwig, Jens Heppner, Maurizio Fondriest, and Eddy Planckaert. After Panasonic ceased sponsoring, Peter Post briefly succeeded in interesting others (Histor) in sponsoring, but the former successes could no longer be matched. In 1995, Peter Post retired from cycling. As early as 1965, Post admitted to having used doping.

After cycling

Since 2005, Peter Post was associated with the as an advisor. Rabobank Cycling TeamHe was also chairman of Club '48, which annually the Gerrit Schulte Trophy awards to the best Dutch rider.

Basis for stamp design

The designer used the book cover as the basis for the Personal Stamp. Character Peter Post that Fred van Slogteren wrote. The little bicycle on the stamp was added especially for me (according to Marjan, the designer's wife). I think that's wonderful!

  1. Truly a fitting memento for a great sportsman. I have forwarded the link to the designer of the stamp. Marjan, thanks again for the tip you gave me about this.

  2. Hi Jan,

Nice stamp on the stamp blog, I'll show it to my husband, he'll like it. He put it together himself a bit with the help of Google; with every stamp he's crafting now, I ask if a little bike can go on it. But sometimes that's not possible. Maybe something will come along again sometime. I've saved your address.

    Regards, Marjan

  3. Dear editor,

As Peter Post's niece, I would like to order the stamps.
    Is this possible?

    Regards, Adri Coomans.

  4. Hello Adrian,

Following an email from Jan van Tellingen, I heard that you are interested in the Peter Post stamps. If Jan doesn't have enough stamps for you, I still have 5 loose ones. If you would like one or more sheets for 10 euros each, I can probably get those for you as well.

    Best regards,
    Marjan Versteyne

P.S. I also have very beautiful Tour de France stamps, both on Marktplaats and in the webshop. Address: http://www.everyoneweb.com/marjanpostzegels

  5. Dear Adri, I have just sent you an email with information. Also that Marjan told me at the time that the stamp was “in the making” and arranged for a bicycle (or rather, a small bicycle) to be placed on it especially for me. I look forward to your reply to my email.
