New Grand Duke of Luxembourg: Guillaume

The new Grand Duke of Luxembourg was sworn in at the Chamber of Deputies in Luxembourg City on 3 October 2025. The 43-year-old Guillaume succeeds his father, the 70-year-old Henri. The royal families of Belgium and the Netherlands were present during the ceremony. The Luxembourg Post has chosen a beautiful design for the new Grand Duke and his wife.

Luxembourg, officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, has an area of ​​2.586 km² and approximately 682.000 inhabitants. The capital is the city of Luxembourg, after which it is named. It is the only country in the world headed by a Grand Duke.

Guillaume is the eldest son of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg and María Teresa Mestre. He has three brothers and a sister. His education included the Lycée Robert-Schumann in Luxembourg, the Beau Soleil boarding school and Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland, and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Camberley, England. He obtained a Bachelor's degree in International Political Science from Brunel University in London. In 2005, he continued his studies in Freiburg, Switzerland. Subsequently, he pursued further studies in Political Science at the Institut Albert-le-Grand in Angers, France, which he successfully completed in 2009. As Hereditary Grand Duke, he has already undertaken several official duties. For instance, he went to Canada in 2005. Guillaume has many hobbies; he is interested in music and sports, plays the piano, and participates in football, swimming, and volleyball. The Grand Duke speaks fluent Luxembourgish, French, German, and English. In addition, he speaks reasonable Spanish. Guillaume had been in a relationship with the Belgian Stéphanie de Lannoy (1984) since 2010. Their engagement was announced on April 26, 2012. The marriage took place on October 19, 2012, and the religious ceremony was held on October 20. On 6 December 2019, the Luxembourg Court announced that the couple were expecting their first child in May 2020, and on 10 May 2020, their son Charles was born. At the time, he was second in line to the throne. He was baptized on 19 September 2020 in the Abbey of Clervaux. On 27 March 2023, their second son was born. He was given the names François Henri Luis Maria Guillaume. This block (Trounwiessel), designed by Jill Els, is intended as a symbolic record of the accession to the throne of Grand Duke Guillaume, describing the key phases of his life and career: his family, his attachment to nature, his international responsibilities, and his involvement with scouting. With its golden accents, the souvenir sheet symbolizes the beginning of a new historical era for the Grand Duchy, according to POST Luxembourg. The sheet, designed by Lea Schroeder, illustrates the transfer of a dynasty that resonates with the fundamental values ​​of Luxembourg: continuity, unity, and proximity. The portrait of the Grand Ducal couple is complemented by symbols such as the Gëlle Fra (Golden Lady), the Grand Ducal Palace, and the Luxembourg flag.
