New postage stamp: The Mariana Trench – A fascinating natural wonder

A new postage stamp dedicated to the Mariana Trench was recently issued. This design pays tribute to one of the most mysterious and impressive natural wonders of our planet.

The Mariana Trench lies in the western Pacific Ocean and, at a depth of approximately 11.000 meters, is the deepest known point in the world's oceans. At its deepest point, the Challenger Deep, the water pressure is immense, yet scientists have discovered astonishing life forms there. Exploring this extreme environment provides important insights into life under extraordinary conditions.

The new stamp serves as a reminder of how little we know about the deep sea and how important its exploration and protection are.

There is also a historical connection to Germany. The northern Mariana Islands belonged to the German Empire from 1899 to 1914. Germany had acquired the island group – with the exception of Guam, which was already under American administration – from Spain. After the outbreak of the First World War, the islands were occupied by Japan. This brief period of German colonial history makes the design of the new stamp particularly interesting from a historical perspective.
