More Snoopy worldwide
To mark the 75th anniversary of the comic character Snoopy, PostNL is issuing the Snoopy 75 Years stamp sheet with 5 framed stamps on August 11, 2025. See my earlier blog post from August 13. Subsequently, PostNL issued another Snoopy gold stamp. More Snoopy stamps have appeared worldwide, even earlier in the Netherlands as December stamps.
Snoopy Gold
To mark the 75th anniversary of the comic character Snoopy, PostNL is issuing a special gold stamp on September 22, 2025. This exclusive stamp costs €50,00 each and comes in luxury packaging, including a certificate of authenticity. The stamp bears the value indication 1 for mail weighing up to 20 grams with a destination within the Netherlands. The design was created by graphic designer Frank Janse of the VormVijf agency in The Hague. Additionally, the Snoopy 75 Years stamp sheet featuring 5 framed stamps was released on August 11, 2025.
For the Snoopy 75th Anniversary stamp with 24-karat gold, Janse used different imagery once again. “As I said, I used the simplest anniversary logo here, because I could easily scale it down. The title SNOOPY differs typographically from the outline letters on the stamp sheet. Those would be far too dominant on the gold stamp. The image of Snoopy with the pink envelope is also different. On the stamp sheet, he has taken the envelope out of the mailbox; on the gold stamp, he is walking home with it. So, a little story after all.”
Snoopy December stamps
Snoopy first appeared as a comic character on October 4, 1950. In Schulz's previous comic series, Li'l Folks, a dog strongly resembling Snoopy had already appeared. He was mentioned by name for the first time in the strip of November 10, 1950. Originally, Schulz wanted to name the dog Sniffy, but he soon discovered that that name was already being used in another strip.

Snoopy England
Snoopy is Charlie Brown's dog, although this was not initially clear. In the first few strips in which he appeared, Charlie accused Snoopy of following him everywhere, and Snoopy was often seen together with Shermy and Patty.
Over the years, Snoopy slowly evolved from a “normal” dog into a more anthropomorphic one. The first step in this change was when Snoopy decided to lie on the roof of his doghouse from then on; something that is now a major hallmark of the character. This happened in the comic strip of August 9, 1951. He also started walking on his hind legs.
Snoopy has a vivid imagination and frequently retreats into his own dream world. The contrast between Snoopy's existence in a dream world and that of Charlie Brown in the real world forms the basis for the humor and philosophy of much of the comic strip. A famous daydream of Snoopy's is imagining himself to be the Flying Ace in his Sopwith Camel, fighting against Manfred von Richthofen (the “Red Baron”) during World War I. To do this, he always puts on aviator goggles, wraps a scarf around his neck, and sits on the roof of his hut as if he were flying. This battle was immortalized in 1966 by the American rock band The Royal Guardsmen in the hit song Snoopy vs. the Red Baron.
Snoopy loves pizza and hates coconuts. He has an alter ego named Joe Cool, wearing sunglasses. He is terrified of icicles hanging above his doghouse.
Snoopy's past was slowly revealed over the years. He was apparently born at the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm. He has a large number of brothers, sisters, cousins, and nieces, a few of whom also occasionally appear in the comic. He was temporarily owned by a girl named Lila before being bought by Charlie Brown.
