Marianne is going for gold at the 2012 World Championships!

Belgium cycling Italy
Valkenburg already hosted the World Championship in 1938, 1948, 1979, and 1998. In 1959, it was Zandvoort, and in 1967, it was Heerlen. So now, for the 7th time, it is in the Netherlands. The World Championship will be held from September 15 to 23, 2012. For the first time, the World Championship is spread over two weekends. Additionally, a team time trial for men and women will take place again. Marianne Vos became women's world champion in 2006. Subsequently, she won silver for five consecutive years. The 2012 World Cycling Championships will be held in South Limburg and will consistently feature Valkenburg as the finish location. On September 23, 2009, in Lugano, Limburg was preferred over Genoa (Italy), Hooglede (Belgium), and Sochi (Russia). On the 16,5-kilometer course for the road races, the Cauberg and the Bemelerberg act as the decisive climbs. The organization in the Netherlands is in the hands of the Province of Limburg in collaboration with eight Limburg municipalities. Valkenburg, known for the Amstel Gold Race and the Cauberg, will serve as the finish location for all races, but the start will take place alternately in Beek, Eijsden-Margraten, Heerlen, Maastricht, or Sittard-Geleen each time. The Chair of the 2012 World Cycling Championships Foundation is Clémence Ross-van Dorp.

World Cycling Championships ..

.. are road races and time trials between cyclists that have been held annually since 1927 by the International Cycling Union is organized. The races are held as one-day road races or time trials. Since 1994, a World Time Trial Championship has also been organized. The World Championships are held in the categories elite (formerly professionals), U23 (formerly amateurs), and women.

World Cup winners

1964 Jan Janssen; 1969 Harm Otttenbros; 1975 Hennie Kuiper; 1978; Gerrie Kneteman; 1979 Jan Raas and in 1985 Joop Sweet Milk.

UCI ProTour

Unlike (almost) all other cycling races, the riders do not ride in brand teams, but in teams per country. In accordance with the UCI ProTourIn the rankings, countries field their number of cyclists: the 10 highest-ranked cycling nations may field nine riders (until 2004, a national team could consist of a maximum of 12 riders). For the other countries, a ranking by continent is used, yielding six, three, or one place depending on the position. The winner of the previous year is always allowed to participate and can thus usually help his country secure an extra starting place (this was not the case in 2006: the Belgians started with nine riders, even though Tom Boonen had become world champion the year before). Because riders race in an often international team for the rest of the year, it happens that riders from different countries help each other, or that riders from the same country work against each other.

Previous victories of Marianne Vos

In 2008 winner of the Giro Donna and in 2011 winner on the track

Program

After the juniors returned to the program in 2011, a team time trial is now also being held. The World Championships therefore last more than a week.
