Climate victims part 5, the pied flycatcher

There aren't many stamps featuring a pied flycatcher. And it could very well be that in no time at all the Ficedula hypoleuca is no longer there itself either. The songbird is a European example of a bird species threatened with extinction. Number 5 from the top 5 of notable climate victims of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Due to global warming, many birds are threatened with extinction. Climate change affects bird behavior. According to the WWF report 'Bird Species and Climate Change: The Global Status Report', for example, there are migratory birds that migrate earlier or not at all anymore.   Mozambique (2002) Belgium (1999) There are also birds, such as the pied flycatcher, whose rhythm no longer corresponds to the rhythm of their habitat due to climate warming. An example of this is the pied flycatcher, a migratory bird that travels long distances. It still arrives in Europe at the same time, whereas the 'caterpillar peak' occurs increasingly earlier in the year. The pied flycatcher is therefore effectively too late and cannot find enough food for its young. As a result, the population in some parts of Europe has declined by nearly 90% over the last twenty years.   Gambia Jersey (2008) The WWF calls the pied flycatcher a European example. Nevertheless, the African countries of Gambia and Mozambique issued stamps featuring this songbird. Unfortunately, the quality of a number of the stamps I found leaves something to be desired. That is why the last two are so small. According to Hans Verolme, Director of the WWF's International Climate Programme, the report shows that birds also serve as a 'canary in the coal mine' when it comes to climate change. Birds are highly sensitive to changes in the climate. Large-scale bird extinction could occur much sooner than expected.
