HM the Queen turns 70
This title was assigned to the special stamps issued on March 13, 1979, for the 70th birthday of HM Queen Juliana. Designer Otto Treumann used the Dutch flag, specifically the red and blue stripes, as the background for two portraits of the Queen. One portrait was depicted 'in profile' and rendered in gold. The second portrait was 'en face' and printed in black.
How did I get to this? In Bate's blog, this stamp was pictured with 'Future topics on the Stamp BlogIt struck me there that the edge at the bottom of the image was rather 'frayed'. And upon enlarging that part, it indeed turned out that the line did not align entirely horizontally with the blue. But was that the case with all stamps? I checked my collection for it, and what did I find?
The stamp in my own pre-printed album was almost perfect. But then I went to look at the duplicates in the stockbook. There I found a stamp where the blue and the gold did not align well!
Relative to the red color band, the blue was shifted slightly to the left and downwards. This was also clearly visible in the width of the white border, on the left at the perforation. A nice 'deviation'. But I encountered an even larger shift.
It turned out that the red band was shifted strongly to the right relative to the blue. Is this a misprint? Then there must be at least 99 other stamps that look like this. If I have business cards printed and there are a few misprints among them, I get angry! But if I buy stamps at a post office counter and there are a few misprints among them, I am happy! Do you reason the same way?
