Fiscal Philately and other stamps

Madeira Netherlands philately
Inspired by Cees Janssen's article of December 10, 2013, I started looking to see if I could find anything in that area. In the past, the Netherlands had many fiscal stamps, including receipt stamps, to be used on receipts exceeding a certain amount. Image_2 001

A philatelist might still occasionally come across such a receipt stamp. The various stamp duties of the Stamp Duty Act of 1917 lapsed as of 1972. Similar to receipt stamps, you will find stamps on contracts such as purchase and lease agreements, but with different values and combinations depending on the statutory rate.

Paper was also used for which stamp duty had to be paid upon purchase. This paper had a pre-printed stamp, embossed, and it also had a watermark with the text “Nederlanden” and sometimes a year and the stamp value.

The Stamp Duty Act was replaced by the Legal Transactions Tax Act in 1972. The Netherlands also had a number of fiscal stamps used for the payment of fees, such as fees for passports and driving licenses, etc. These stamps could be paid for at the counter when required. The collection of fees by affixing a standard postage stamp occurs with the so-called postal identity card. On this, I found the Juliana en face 1949 stamp of 50 cents.

I also found a mortgage stamp on a document in which a “Sworn Clerk at the Mortgage Office 's-Hertogenbosch” declares that a specific plot of land is unencumbered. This is also a form of levying of fees; fees or levies are charges that a government requests for the provision of a specific service.

Finally, a little piece I literally found during a holiday years ago on Madeira. A small, homemade envelope with a note containing two Portuguese stamps. My knowledge of Portuguese is minimal, but it has something to do with water. I would appreciate a translation.

  1. I have a few as well, but the best thing is to have them on a document, so you know what those “fees” were paid for.
    Nice overview, Franc.

The definitive catalogue for fiscal stamps of the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg and their former colonial territories is published by Barefoot, UK. The English-language catalogue bears the fitting title “Benelux Revenues”.
The railway stamps are also included in this book.
The 2nd edition was published in 2006, with black-and-white images and price lists, over 120 pages in large format (approximately A4). Prices range between €25 and €30.
