You start a themed collection of bicycles and later realize that many cycling events were and are organized… indeed, boundless and worldwide. Previously, we “cycled through” the cycling events of the continents: Europe, Africa, and America. In this episode, we are going “bicycle-lately” through Asia.

The Southeast Asian Games owe their origins to the Southeast Asian Peninsula Games, or SEAP Games. On May 22, 1958, delegates from Southeast Asian countries attended the third Asian Games in Tokyo. The SEAP Games were initiated by Laung Sukhumnaipradit, then Vice-Chairman of the Thailand Olympic Committee. The reasoning was that a regional sporting event could strengthen cooperation, understanding, and relations between the countries in the Southeast Asian region. The 1st SEAP Games were held in Bangkok from December 12 to 17, 1959. More than 527 athletes and officials from Thailand, Burma, Malacca (now Malaysia), Singapore, South Vietnam, and Laos participated in 12 sports. The Games are held every two years. The 50th anniversary of the SEAP Games was commemorated in 2009. In 2011, Indonesia was the host.

Asia Games

About the Fourth Asian Games 1962 in Jakarta.

Opening: August 24, 1962. Closing date: September 4, 1962. Country of the host city: Indonesia. 16 participating countries: Participants: 1545. It was the best time and the worst time for the 04th Asian Games held in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The Asian Games experienced great pressure from the Indonesian authorities. Taipei refused applications from delegations from Israel and China. However, new records were set in athletics and swimming, among others. This would prove that the Asian Games played an 'indispensable' role in the promotion of sport in Asia.

Pan-Arab Games

The Pan-Arab Games are a regional multi-sport event held between the nations of the Arab world. The first Games were held in 1953 in Alexandria, Egypt. It was intended to hold the Games every four years, but due to political unrest and financial difficulties, it became an unstable event.

Southeast Asian Games

The Southeast Asian Games (also known as the SEA Games) is a biennial multi-sport event featuring participants from the current 11 countries of Southeast Asia. The Games are held under the supervision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

National Sports Week

Pekan Olahraga Nasional (PON) is Indonesian for the National Games. PON is a four-year sporting event in which athletes from all provinces of Indonesia compete against each other. Ultimately, one province is the winner of the games. The Indonesian Sports Association (ISI) was founded in Jakarta in 1938 with the aim of improving the coordination of existing sports associations, including the football federation. During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia from 1942 to 1945, sports activities were coordinated by the Sports Practice Movement. After the Indonesian declaration of independence in 1945, a conference was held in January 1946, which led to the establishment of the Indonesian Olympic Committee.

South Asian Games

The South Asian Games (SAF Games or SAG, formerly known as the South Asian Federation Games, also known as SA Games) are a multi-sport event held among participants from South Asia. The governing body of these games was established in 1983. Currently, the SAG is joined by eight members, namely: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The association was founded in 1982 in New Delhi, under the leadership of Rajiv Gandhi.

East Asian Games

The East Asian Games is also a multi-sport event organized by the East Asian Games Association (EAGA) and held every four years since 1993 among athletes from East Asian countries and territories of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA). The East Asian Games is one of the five Regional Games of the OCA. The others are the Central Asian Games, the South Asian Games, the Southeast Asian Games (or SEA Games), and the West Asian Games.

China Tour 1996

I have not been able to find any further information about this Tour. However, it is clear that a (cycling) stamp sheet previously issued by the USA was used to draw attention to the 1996 Tour de China.
