Exhibition about America and Donald Trump with work by artist Andres Serrano
The race for the White House has erupted. Forum Groningen marks this political battle with an exhibition of the work of American artist Andres Serrano, starring the presidential candidate on whom all eyes are focused: Donald Trump. America & Trump by Andres Serrano is on view at the Forum from Saturday, March 23, through November 5, 2024.
In the coming months, we will once again witness the age-old battle between the Republicans and the Democrats. Challenger Donald Trump undoubtedly plays the leading role in this. With this exhibition, Forum Groningen therefore focuses on the United States. After all, what 'America' decides has determined the course of the world for centuries. Furthermore, Trump's populist style and America First policies are clearly leaving their mark globally: in our House of Representatives, the terms 'fake news', 'election fraud', and 'the Netherlands first' are now being heard. The questions that Andres Serrano (New York, 1950) poses with his work therefore concern us indirectly as well.
America & Trump by Andres Serrano
The exhibition at Forum Groningen consists of a unique compilation of three works by Andres Serrano, which are on display together for the first time. Together, they reflect on American society and Donald Trump, who, after a career as an entrepreneur, real estate mogul, and TV star, held the highest office in the United States and is now making another bid for the presidency.
The photo series America (2001-2004)
Following the attack on the World Trade Center in September 2001, Andres Serrano worked for more than three years on the photo series America to give the 'enemy' a face. It consists of large, monumental portraits of unknown and well-known Americans: from firefighters to drug addicts, and from Yoko Ono to Anna Nicole Smith and Donald Trump. Through Serrano's lens, they each reveal the face of America in their own way. More than thirty portraits from the photo series are on display in the exhibition in Groningen.
The multimedia installation The Game: All Things Trump (2018-2024)
The Game: All Things Trump is a dazzling collection of over 1000 Trump objects that Serrano has managed to gather since 2018 through auctions, eBay, and word-of-mouth. From Trump-branded hotel and casino souvenirs to sports memorabilia, Melanie and Trump's wedding cake, signed magazine covers, and photos. Recently, The Game collection was expanded with Trump's gold 'Never Give Up' sneakers.
From the film Insurrection (2022)
Serrano created Insurrection in response to the events of January 6, 2021, when a protest rally against the November 2020 election results culminated in the storming of the Capitol. He takes the viewer at breakneck speed through the events of that day using smartphone footage, news clips, and film clips from American history. The film (75 min) is shown continuously in the exhibition.
Andres serrano
With his often controversial photography, Andres Serrano (New York, 1950) engages in a dialogue with contemporary society. His Piss Christ (1987), a photograph of a crucifix submerged in urine, fueled a debate in America regarding freedom of artistic expression and the public funding of controversial art. Andres Serrano also caused quite a stir in the Netherlands with his exhibition A History of Sex at the Groninger Museum in 1997. Universal themes such as death, faith, sex, and violence form a common thread in Serrano's work.
