Documentary Anak Indië, In Nederland Door Omstandigheden (INDO) in cinemas

Sometimes you are moved by a documentary or film during the holiday season. In this case, the documentary *Anak Indië, In Nederland Door Omstandigheden (INDO)*, and that is not entirely coincidental given my Indonesian roots. But what do the Dutch know about our former colony? There is very little in history books, and the older Indo-Dutch population is dying out. Do you collect Dutch East Indies or Indonesia, for example? The design of the film's poster even features stamps from our former colony. That bodes well for the film.

Anak India

Anak Indië is a moving and humorous documentary about Dutch East Indies heritage, in which the present and the past come together in a mosaic of stories. The Netherlands has over two million people with roots in the former colony of the Dutch East Indies, of whom over 300.000 were forced to repatriate to the Netherlands after the Second World War. For Indo-Dutch people, Moluccan families, and Peranakan Chinese, it meant a new beginning in a country that did not always welcome them with open arms. Through collage animations, music, 8mm archive footage, and personal stories from well-known Indo-Dutch people such as Yvonne Keuls, Adriaan van Dis, and Wieteke van Dort, the film shows how they had to build a new life.
The Netherlands (2025): Roman Giants with Adriaan van Dis (5th stamp).
The archival footage illustrates the feeling shared by many people with roots in the Dutch East Indies: the feeling of being born between two cultures. The long-awaited new film by Hetty Naaijkens–Retel Helmrich, director of Klanken van Oorsprong, Buitenkampers, and Contractpensions. The documentary begins with a special edition of De Slimste Mens featuring Adriaan van Dis as special guest. Additionally, the following Dutch celebrities appear, among others: Thé Tjong-Khing, Peter van Dongen, the kite flyers, KNIL soldiers, and descendants of The Blue Diamonds. Do you have these three different sheets of Grenzeloos Nederland & Indonesië (2012) in your collection? The 6 stamps are the same across all three sheets. The text tabs on the 3 sheets are different. Literature (#290.000), Architecture (#15.000), and Performing Arts (#15.000).     I hope you enjoy it if you would like to see the documentary/film of over 2 hours at a cinema in your region. More than 30.000 people have seen Anak Indië.
