The University of Leuven is 600 years old

Leiden University is celebrating its 450th anniversary this year. But there is always someone better. My friend Hero Wit gave me postal information about the University of Leuven, which has existed for 600 years. But why is there a chair on this stamp? History The first university in Belgium was founded in 1425. This makes 2025 a true jubilee year for the university. So, it was high time for a stamp sheet. For this issue, the university provided an image to play the leading role in the design: the Sedes Sapientiae (Latin for 'Seat of Wisdom'). This image is based on a medieval miraculous image of the Virgin Mary. That image has long been the symbol of the University of Leuven. It has turned out to be a beautiful stamp sheet.   The greatest challenge for the designer in this design was to connect the image, which has strong historical relevance, with the future. After all, the role of universities is to shape the society of the future. The designer achieved this using geometric rings in the background in the university's house colors. They are a reference to the halos and the throne on the original image. In this way, the geometric rings form a bridge between the traditional and the modern, according to designer Wim Vandersleyen. Previous publications of the University A stamp was also issued for the 550th anniversary. Here too, we see 'the chair of wisdom'.

  And for the 575th year, a stamp featuring a chair was also issued.
