The bicycle at the 1984 Olympic Games (6)

The Summer Olympic Games of the XXIII Olympiad were held in Los Angeles in 1984. No other cities had submitted bids to host these Games. It was the second time Los Angeles had hosted the Games, following 1932. There was apprehension beforehand regarding the Games in this large city. It was feared that the organization of the Games might well fail because they were being held in a sprawling metropolis of more than twelve million inhabitants. Moreover, account was also taken of the possibility that smog could pose a threat to the athletes' performance. The mascot of these Games was Sam the Eagle. Cycling is one of the Olympic sports practiced at the Games. The sport has been on the program continuously since the first edition of the modern Summer Olympic Games.

The United States won a total of 9 medals across the various cycling disciplines, namely: 4 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze.

Bangladesh with the sprint. Antigua Barbuda with the Madison on the track, and Belize with the individual pursuit. Barbados issued a block of four, symbolizing the velodrome and/or athletics track. The brown stamp with the $1 value shows a track cyclist. The number of participants from these three countries was zero, fifteen, and forty, respectively. There were no medal winners among them. Beautiful image on the card of the women's track race and on the stamp the women's road race. Sandra Schumacher won bronze in the road race over a distance of 79,2 kilometers in a time of 2:11:14. That means an average of over 37 km per hour. Here we see various cycling disciplines, from left to right: individual road race; sprint and the team time trial. In the 100-kilometer team time trial, the Netherlands achieved with Jos Albert, Erik breukink, Maarten Ducrot en Gert Jacobs fourth place. On the Togolaise stamp, you see a cyclist on a track bike with bullhorn handlebars. David Weller finished sixth for Jamaica in the 1000-meter time trial. Korea, Poland, and Nigeria will showcase several disciplines in succession: Madison on the track, the road race, and the team time trial. Republic of Togolese honors Fredy Schmidtke because of his gold medal in the 1000-meter time trial. Moreover, Fredy also achieved an eighth place in the 1000-meter sprint. The other two countries show a picture of cycling on the track (Philippinas) and on the road (Cameroon). Gene Samuel managed to secure fourth place for Trinidad & Tobago in the track time trial over a distance of 1000 meters.

Dutch cycling performances in Los Angeles
