The bicycle at the 1976 Olympic Games (4)
The Summer Olympic Games of the XXI Olympiad were held in Montreal in 1976. Other cities that were candidates to host the Games that year were Moscow and Los Angeles. Moscow was the overwhelming favorite for the 1976 Games, yet the IOC decided in Amsterdam in 1969 to award the Games to Montreal, after the then-mayor, Jean Drapeau, had promised to organize 'simple Games'. Montreal allocated 350 million dollars for the Games. The French architect Roger Taillibert designed the stadium, which was unique of its kind: it was open during the summer months and could be covered during the winter months. The roof was attached to an overhanging tower which also housed sports halls. The plans for the construction of the swimming pool and the velodrome indicated the same architectural daring. Cycling is one of the Olympic sports practiced at the Olympic Games. The sport has been on the program continuously since the first edition of the modern Summer Olympic Games.
