Camp Fire Girls

post scouting stamps
campfire-girls-stampEveryone knows Scouting, the Boy Scouts, the Guides, Cubs, Brownies, and so on. All organizations fully engaged in activities for young people. Less well-known is an organization that was founded in the United States on March 17, 1910: the Camp Fire Girls! What kind of organization is this? It turns out that its 50th anniversary prompted the American postal service to dedicate a stamp to it. The stamp was issued on November 1, 1960, and features the organization's emblem. camp-fire-girls Three members of the Camp Fire Girls are pictured on the first-day envelope, and the stamp shows a fourth member looking at us from behind the address and saying: She cares…. Do you? This already makes the objectives a little clearer. camp-fire-girls-fdc-775-200p.jpg The Camp Fire Girls were founded by two people who had also been involved in the founding of the Boy Scouts in America, Luther Halsey Gulick and his wife Charlotte Vetter. luther-halsey-gulick-400p.jpg Their motto was given to the organization: Give service. They also have a password: WoHeLo, which is a contraction of the words Work, Health, and Love. They also have a law consisting of short slogans (loosely translated): Worship – God, be religious; Seek beauty – seek to see the beautiful sides; Give service – be of service; Pursue knowledge – enrich your knowledge; Be trustworthy – be trustworthy; Hold on to health – ensure you stay healthy; Glorify work – do not hate working; Be happy – be happy. These are not demands that are made to be obeyed, but slogans that must come from the heart. Whether that always works?
