Experience Ireland in The Hague during St. Patrick's Festival 2025
What King's Day is to the Dutch, St. Patrick's Day is to the Irish. 'Lá Fhéile Pádriag' is the ultimate expression of Irish identity. St. Patrick's Day is the national holiday of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Montserrat, and the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The holiday falls on March 17, commemorating the country's patron saint, Saint Patrick. Wherever the Irish community lives, March 17 is celebrated on a grand scale. In the center of The Hague, the major celebration is being organized for the 13th time on Sunday, March 16.
Wat is St. Patrick’s Day?
St. Patrick's Day is an annual holiday in honor of the Irish national saint, St. Patrick (or Patrick). It is also the Irish national holiday, which is celebrated exuberantly every year. It is also a special day in many other parts of the world – particularly where many Irish immigrants have settled.
When does St. Patrick's Day fall?
St. Patrick's Day falls on March 17 every year. This is because St. Patrick died on March 17, 461. Although the Irish saint therefore lived in the 5th century, the celebration did not take on its current form until much later. Originally, St. Patrick's Day in Ireland was celebrated with church services and religious ceremonies to honor St. Patrick.

But when Irish immigrants brought the tradition to the US in the 18th century, the day developed into a secular and more relaxed celebration centered on Irish culture. The world's first St. Patrick's Day parade was held in 1601 in St. Augustine, Florida. At the time, it was a Spanish colony, and the Irish priest Ricardo Artur (or Richard Arthur) had taken the initiative for the event.

But then a century later, in 1737, a St. Patrick's Day parade took place in Boston when Irish soldiers from the English army marched through the streets. And 25 years after that, it was New York's turn, which held its first St. Patrick's Day parade in 1762. Since then, this has happened in many more cities, and the Irish saint is also honored in other parts of the world.

What about St. Patrick?
St. Patrick was born in 390 as Patricius in the western part of the Roman Empire (Britannia). At that time, the Irish often sailed to Britain to plunder and abduct people to take back as slaves. This also happened to the then 15-year-old Patricius, who was snatched from his parents' home in the dead of night and spent six years as a slave in Ireland.

What is the connection between St. Patrick's Day and a clover?
St. Patrick is often depicted with a shamrock in his hand. This is because he is said to have explained the Christian Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) to pagans using a shamrock. The shamrock and the color green are now Irish national symbols.

Shamrock is also the call sign of the Irish national airline Aer Lingus, which uses the shamrock as its logo. The shamrock was used in antiquity for its alleged medicinal properties.

The whole world celebrates St. Patrick's Day

Many people eat corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day, an old Irish-American tradition. In 19th-century New York, corned beef was a cheaper alternative to the ham eaten in Ireland.

The 2024 English Christmas stamps feature drawings of five cathedrals, including St Patrick's Church of Ireland Cathedral in Armagh. The Dean of Armagh, the Very Reverend Shane Forster, said he was delighted that the cathedral had been chosen and that the artist had depicted a “beautiful traditional winter scene.” The drawings are the work of Cornwall-based artist Judy Joel. Forster said she deserved congratulations for creating a very special series of Christmas stamps that convey a message of joy and hope at Christmas. “The cathedrals featured on the stamps stand central to every image as symbols of faith and at the heart of their local communities,” he added.
