Tax on newspapers
A branch of philately is 'fiscal philately'. It is a collecting area that is of interest to only a few. Pre-printed albums do not exist for it, and people often cannot find a catalogue on tax stamps and the like. Let alone one on tax stamps and impressed tax stamps.
One of the oldest newspapers in my collection is an edition of the Kaiserlich-Königlich privigelierte Prager Zeitung from Friday, September 12, 1823.
This includes much news regarding the end of the intervention by French troops to restore the monarchy in Spain.
The Spanish General Rafael de Riego commanded the Third Spanish Corps to drive out the French troops who had invaded on April 7, 1823. The newspaper could not have suspected at the time that three days later the general would be taken prisoner through treason, having been accused of high treason. This accusation was, as it later turned out, completely unfounded. He was transferred to Madrid, tried, and hanged on November 7, 1823, in the Place de la Cebada (Plaza de la Cebada) in Madrid.
But it contains much more political and military news. Such as the report that the Duke of Wellington (the Prince of Waterloo) arrived in Brussels on September 11, 1823, and had departed for Hal (or Halle) at six o'clock in the morning on September 12. What the Duke was doing in the then Southern Netherlands is not mentioned! Could it perhaps have had to do with the growing discontent between the Belgians and the Dutch, which would culminate in the secession?
But ultimately, it was the imprint of the tax stamp that mattered to me. And the historical facts? That was a nice bonus. 
Nice collecting area. Do you always have to keep the complete piece (newspaper) just for the stamp? I myself still have a few A4 envelopes with franking machine stamps that I like, and I have already thought about using scissors.
Franc, scissors are always the last resort when there is no other way. Personally, I prefer to keep complete pieces, but with the example of tax stamps and newspaper stamps, you very often see only a corner of the newspaper with the stamp impression or the piece with the pressed or pasted tax stamp. Impressions from franking machine stamps are very often kept in cut-out form, so as a strip.
