Great Britain’s Royal Mail has issued commemorative stamps to mark 50 years of one of the world’s most popular bands, Pink Floyd. The set of 10 stamps features album covers and live performance photos to mark 1966 – the year the band went professional, having formed in 1965. Pink Floyd are known for their quirky album covers, as they used graphic designers and photographers to create their unique images,such as the iconic prism cover for their album Dark Side of the Moon in 1973.

The group was formed by bassist Roger Waters, drummer Nick Mason, guitarist Syd Barrett and keyboard player Rick Wright in 1965. Guitarist David Gilmour joined in 1967. Syd Barrett left in 1968. The group famously had numerous tensions and clashes, which led to Wright quitting the band in 1979, followed by Roger Waters, who chose to leave in 1985. Wright rejoined the band in 1987. Dave Gilmour and Nick Mason continued as Pink Floyd after Waters and Wright left, but when Wright rejoined they went on to make two more albums. After many years of bad feeling, the band managed to put their differences aside to mark their 40th anniversary with an incredible reunion performance in 2005 for the Live 8 concert in London. After the enigmatic Syd Barrett left Pink Floyd in 1970 he released the album ‘The Madcap Laughs’. Sadly, Syd Barrett died in 2006 and Rick Wright in 2008.
