With the issuance of a special postage stamp, Germany is honoring the outstanding significance of the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt. The stamp was issued to mark the 125th anniversary of the Mathildenhöhe in Darmstadt and commemorates the first exhibition of the Darmstadt artists' colony in 1901. This event is considered an important milestone on the path to modern architecture and design.

The Mathildenhöhe is one of the most important centers of the Reform and Art Nouveau movements in Europe. At the beginning of the 20th century, artists, architects, and designers developed new ideas here for the interplay of art, architecture, and everyday life. Their work influenced later movements such as the Bauhaus and had a lasting impact on the development of modernism.

Since 2021, the Mathildenhöhe has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ensemble includes, among other things, the striking Wedding Tower, exhibition buildings, artists' houses, and artfully designed gardens. Together, they form a unique testament to the transition from Art Nouveau to modern architecture.

With this special stamp, Germany honors not only an architectural masterpiece, but also a place where groundbreaking ideas for modern building and design originated.
