International Day of Democracy on 15 September 2026

In 2007, the United Nations declared September 15 as the 'International Day of Democracy'. On this day, the state of democracy in the world is reflected upon. Democracy is a process and a goal that can only become a reality for everyone with the full support of the international community. In the Netherlands, September 15, 2026, coincides with Prinsjesdag this year.

From the King's Speech 2026:
Members of the States General,
Today, September 15, has been declared the International Day of Democracy by the United Nations. This adds extra luster to this Prinsjesdag (Opening of Parliament). At the same time, it reminds us that democracy requires continuous protection and maintenance. Democracy is not a simple calculation, but a mentality that must live within each of us. Everyone who does something for another – as a volunteer, caregiver, or otherwise – contributes to the common good and makes the Netherlands stronger. Fortunately, that Dutch tradition of community spirit still exists, as an antidote to polarization. That is why it is so important to declare the International Day of Democracy.

The values of freedom, human rights, and universal suffrage are essential to democracy. Democracy, in turn, is the natural environment for the protection and realization of human rights. The link between democracy and human rights is enshrined in Article 21, paragraph 3, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states:
“The will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of the government; this will shall be expressed in periodic and fair elections, which shall be held pursuant to universal and equal suffrage and by secret ballot or according to a procedure which equally ensures the freedom of the vote.” It is important not to further narrow the concept of democracy to the equality of half plus one. Democracy must unite people, not pit them against each other.

On the occasion of International Democracy Day 2026, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized “ the importance of bringing together people from different societies to enrich decision-making, foster trust, and build more peaceful, inclusive, and resilient societies. ”

The UN Democracy Fund, part of the UN Office for Partnerships, is organizing an event at UN Headquarters on Tuesday, September 15, International Democracy Day, to highlight how deliberative democracy can contribute to greater influence and engagement by involving diverse voices in decision-making.
During the event, experiences from citizens' assemblies around the world will be reviewed, and it will be explored how participation, dialogue, and inclusion can strengthen trust and contribute to more responsive, accountable, and effective governance.
