750 years of Amsterdam

The first time we encounter the name Amsterdam, in the form Amestelledamme, in history is on October 27, 1275. At that time, it was still a small village on the Amstel, albeit one with a favorable location for trade. In 1275, Amsterdam officially received the toll privilege: this moment is therefore considered the birth date of the city. From 1300, when Amsterdam officially received city rights, the city truly began to grow. Among other factors, the occupation of Antwerp by the Spaniards in the 16th century and industrialization ensured that Amsterdam grew into the global metropolis it is today. The Amsterdam 750 anniversary year will be celebrated on a grand scale in 2024 and 2025 with numerous events and initiatives in and around Amsterdam. Past, future, and connection are the three main pillars of the anniversary. With the commemorative coin, we underscore these pillars, creating a magnificent memento of 750 years of Amsterdam that will last forever.   Design The 750 Years Amsterdam Five Euro 2024 in UNC quality was designed by artist Hans GremmenThe interplay between then and now is clearly visible on both the obverse and reverse of the coin. The obverse features the portrait of King Willem-Alexander. He has been drawn by the artist in such a way that his portrait adopts the same style as those of previous Dutch monarchs. The reverse side of the coin consists of two halves. One half features an image of an old marking pliers from 1350 bearing the Amsterdam coat of arms. This is reportedly the first time the coat of arms was used. This half of the coin has a matte finish. The other half features contemporary typography, in which the text '750 jaar Amsterdam' and the years 1275 – 2025 are written. This half has a more glossy finish. Both halves are joined by the placement of three crosses from the Amsterdam coat of arms in the center of the reverse side. The coin is housed in a coin card depicting the iconic St. Nicholas Basilica on the obverse. A portion of the official Amsterdam 750 garland is visible on the reverse.
