75 Years of Churches in Wartime (1950) for Reconstruction
It has been 75 years since the series Churches in Wartime was published. It was the time of reconstruction, also for the destroyed churches. It was also the second First Day Cover of the Netherlands. PTT and the Minister of Transport and Public Works agreed to the issuance of a series of five stamps. The series was sold from July 17 to September 15, 1950. The series consisted of five stamps with the same image. The designer was the painter Rein Draijer (also spelled Drayer). Reindert Juurt (Rein) Draijer (1899 – 1986) was a painter, sculptor, designer, and ceramist belonging to the New Hague School. This was his first stamp commission. In total, he would design 43 stamps between 1950 and 1981.
Two designs were known at the time of this issue:
- IKO takes center stage, with symbols such as a cross, a dove, the world, and the sun.
- The Good Samaritan, background of destroyed church building.
