50 years of Suriname's independence (1975): Srefidensi Dey

On November 25, 2025, also known as Srefidensi Dey, it will be exactly 50 years since Suriname gained independence. For the first time, the inhabitants of Suriname decided for themselves how they wanted to govern the country. A historic moment to commemorate and celebrate together with you. Over the past months and weeks, many programs about the history of Suriname have been broadcast in the media. Many exhibitions have been organized covering diverse perspectives (politics, culture, nature) on Suriname.

Independence of Suriname (1975)

Surinamese independence was ushered in on November 25, 1975. With this, Suriname continued independently and was no longer part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Suriname had been a colony of the Netherlands from 1667 to 1954 and had since been a country within the kingdom, as stipulated in the Statute for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Surinamese independence was preceded by a process of decolonization, a large part of which was completed the day before the date of independence.

During the Second World War, Queen Wilhelmina announced in a radio address on December 7, 1942, that the overseas territories would be granted a greater degree of freedom after the war. This was interpreted by a section of the Surinamese population as a step towards independence. Since independence came into effect in 1975, November 25 has been the annual national holiday, also known as Srefidensi Dey.

The first governor of Suriname, Ferrier, the Dutch Prime Minister Den Uyl, and Queen Juliana signed the treaty. Since then, the official name has been the Republic of Suriname. Ferrier became the first president of the new South American state. Five years later, a coup took place led by non-commissioned officer Desi Bouterse, but this did not put an end to the changing of the guard in the office of president.

In the series of presidents who have served out, two names stand out: the aforementioned Bouterse, who served twice for a few days, and Venetiaan, who exercised the highest civil authority three times for a total of fifteen years, beginning in 1991. Venetiaan, a former Minister of Education, was succeeded by Bouterse following democratic elections in 2010. After losing the election, Bouterse was succeeded as president by Chan Santokhi in 2020. As of July 16, 2025, the current president is Jennifer Simons (NDP).
